As simple as it is. Triage is a system of quick medical evaluation of patient’s health that has been used in emergency medicine for years. There are many types of triage systems, but they generally base on assigning colors to every patient that e.g. was injured in a car accident, or came to the emergency room. Now it’s possible to learn how to do it correctly in virtual reality (VR).


Quick medical evaluation of the injured is on the top of the to-do-list after the emergency services arrive on the accident place. It is vital that the assessment goes quick and in according to the standards to be sure that no element has been passed by. Any mistake or omission from the accepted code of conduct may cost someone's life. Therefore, Flint has been asked by one of our Clients to prepare a complete application that would serve young doctors and EMT’s. Thanks to our Triage they can learn what needs to be done to provide first aid and correctly qualify the patient.

We can build any kind of image in virtual reality. Accident scene is not an exception. Therefore, our developers and graphics worked with doctors and EMT’s to create altogether eight sceneries allowing to mirror real accidents 1:1. Our solution makes it possible to create an infinite number of training scenarios.

Our solution

Our solution reflects the reality to an extremely high degree. A trainee needs just to put the goggles on and grab the VR controllers. Then they will see the scenario that a trainer has prepared. The trainer can choose between several feature such as:

  • scenery – g. car accidents, riots,
  • time of the accident – day or night
  • number of casualties – e.g. age, sex, skin color, height
  • type of casualties – e.g. fractures, sprains, hepatitis, bruises, disorientation,
  • complete condition of the injured – e.g. consciousness, the number of breaths per minute, heart rate, airway patency

The trainee that “arrives” on the scene has to go through all the Triage steps. So they will see several people injured in certain context (according to the scenario planned by the instructor). They need to quickly asses the accident scene and provide medical aid to every injured. The examination of each person is individual and consists of such procedures as i.a. examination of consciousness, questions about well-being, applying a dressing, hemorrhage stopping. The main difficulty is that a future medic will have to decide what to do first, and he/she needs to react fast. Each examination must end with getting a categorization wristband. There are four such color-coded categories in Triage – green, yellow, red or black. They reflect the health of the injured. Green patients do not require help, their injuries are not serious. Yellow ones need assistance, but just after the red patients, who need help immediately, because their life is in danger. Patients with black tag are dead. Each injured must finally get one and the training ends by reporting to the firefighter-in-charge how many injured of each category are on the accident scene.

The trainee can rotate in any direction and feel like they are in the action. All of the interactions are made with a VR controller. The trainee simply chooses the possible sentences  and action out of a few propositions the application provides.

Triage VR resembles e-learning, but placed in some other reality. It is so effective because it brings a lot more engagement and reality – a participant is now literally in the course, not in front of a computer or in a lecture hall. After graduating from Triage VR course, a medic’s knowledge will be systematized and they will be much eager to use it in a real accident (confirmed by scientific research, thanks to the impact on many senses, VR courses are much more effective than old-type trainings).
